Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin issued serious warnings regarding Sam Altman's digital identity project World, formerly known as Worldcoin, (WLD.

With more than 13 million "unique human" records, World continues to grow in the digital identity space, while Buterin stated that such projects could jeopardize online anonymity.

In his article published today, Buterin evaluated the potential benefits and harms of digital identity systems that use zero-knowledge proofs )zero-knowledge proofs – ZK(. He argued that systems based on a "one identity per person" model, such as World, could threaten the privacy of internet users.

"Even if wrapped in ZK, we carry the risk of all your online activities being effectively matched to a single identity in a person-based identity system," said Buterin, highlighting that eliminating anonymity in the growing digital threat environment could have serious negative consequences.

World was developed by Tools for Humanity, founded by Sam Altman and Alex Blania. Users prove they are human by scanning their eyes with devices called "Orb", thereby obtaining a World ID and earning WLD tokens. The biometric data used in the identity creation process is protected by ZK technology.

Buterin acknowledged the privacy advantage provided by ZK technology, but stated that the imposition of a singular identity by the system could be harmful in the long run. He recalled that similar systems have proliferated in regions such as the European Union and Taiwan, stating that this trend is becoming global.

"At first glance, the widespread adoption of ZK-supported digital identities may seem like a significant achievement against bots and fake accounts on social media, online voting, and various platforms," wrote Buterin, adding that despite this, the users' freedom to manage multiple email or social media accounts could be eliminated with these systems.

The World project is making progress despite criticism from privacy advocates. Launched in the U.S., World is preparing to issue a Visa card while taking steps to ensure user identity verification in a pilot program conducted with Tinder in Japan.

Buterin is proposing a more pluralistic model in response to these developments:

"Instead of singular identity systems wrapped in ZK, a pluralistic structure should be adopted where identities can be provided in different ways by multiple institutions, platforms, or individuals."
