The company reported better-than-expected earnings and an upbeat quarterly forecast at the end of April. As of the end of June, Microsoft had 228,000 employees worldwide, which means the move will affect thousands of employees. This could be Microsoft's largest round of layoffs since it laid off 10,000 people in 2023. In January, the company announced a round of small, performance-based layoffs. A Microsoft spokesperson said the new round of layoffs had nothing to do with performance.
